Journal number 3!
Today we went to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and we learned about the issues facing Singapore in regard to massive population growth and transportation. Although their current transportation system is adequate, they will need to deal with issues of congestion and slow transportation in the near future. This reminded me of America. Since I live so close to Washington, DC, I deal with traffic congestion on a regular basis. The ideas they are proposing would also aid America, and could help us with our pollution problems as well.
We went to the Public Utilities Board (PUB) soon after. This does not strictly relate to my country because we have plenty of water sources, and the issue of a “dry well” does not worry us too much. It was, however, interesting to learn about the process of treating used water into water that can be utilized for drinking, cooking, and many other things.
Yesterday, we had a Summit Dialogue with Ms. Tan Ching Yee. She works in the Department of Healthcare and she discussed the issue of accessibility, affordability, quality, and sustainability in regard to healthcare. It was very interesting to listen to what she had to say on the matter, because I’ve never really given much thought to healthcare. With the pressing issue of “Obamacare” in my country, it was nice to see how a different country views healthcare. It helped my shape my own views and determine what I believed was best for my country (although it doesn’t make too much of a difference right now, since I can’t legally vote).
All in all, these past few days have been very informative, and will give me a new perspective on politics.
